For over 25 years, doing the right thing has always been the very foundation of our purpose and values. This includes enriching lives and investing in the communities in which we live, work and serve. For us, success means more when it’s shared. It’s why we place as much emphasis on giving back, as we do on growing the business.
This African proverb embodies the very sentiment that drives the Blake ethos – teamwork. At Blake, we believe that it’s up to every staff member to uphold our values. It’s why corporate social responsibility has always been, and will continue to be, a key aspect of what we stand for.
Blake engage in extensive recruitment, training and development programmes directed towards previously disadvantaged communities. At present, we develop and employ an average of 100 unemployed people from impoverished areas each month. With us, they receive the training they need so that they can work towards a better future for themselves and their families.
We also engage in various social welfare programmes across KwaZulu-Natal through our corporate social responsibility policy run by Blake’s Domestic Charity Committee. These include the provision of much-needed computers, roof repairs and the upgrading of bathrooms at a local safe house for abused women and children.
As one of South Africa’s best-loved events in support of a very worthy cause, the CANSA Shavathon is an event that we look forward to supporting on a regular basis. Blake recognise the importance of showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. It’s why we can’t wait to shave our heads in support of those whose hair has succumbed to chemotherapy, or for those who have bravely triumphed in their fight against cancer.
We were excited to participate in the 12th national CANSA Shavathon in March. Those bold enough to take the plunge saw their heads shaved, and those wanting to keep their locks took a walk on the wild side with creative sprays, styles and stencils.
We are the proud sponsors of the Lacoste Football Club (LFC), based in Phoenix. Having received support from us, the team has been able to perform well at both club and league levels. More recently, they were inducted into the Premier Soccer League, under the SAFA’s discretion.
The team itself is managed by one of our own Security and Facilities employees, who also coaches and manages youths that show an interest in soccer. He has developed a junior team, which he is currently training to join the senior team.
Here, our vision is to provide a fitness and football programme for women within the same community, so that they too may enjoy the benefits of a team sport like soccer. We hope that with our support, the team can reach all of their goal and strive to create new ones, as they grow from strength to strength.
